The Art of Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, which when translated literally means ‘Foot-Fist-Art’. The art of taekwondo dates back to 2333 BC, and teaches more than physical fighting skills. It is a discipline that can enhance our spirit and life, by training our mind as well as our body. Taekwondo’s high, flexible, speed and dynamic kicks and moves have attracted a huge audience to the sport. Today, taekwondo has become a global martial art and sport that has gained an international reputation, and stands among the official games in the Olympics.

At Gurumu Taekwondo, we strive for excellence and embrace all aspects of the art form, including traditional taekwondo, sport taekwondo (sparring), poomsae (patterns) and self-defence.

Traditional Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a powerful and dynamic martial art, and the traditional version of the art form refers to how it was practised between the 1940s and 1960s. The fundamental techniques of traditional taekwondo consist of kicks, blocks and strikes. At Gurumu Taekwondo, we teach this in a structured manner to ensure students are learning and developing to a high standard, which in turn enables them to be proficient in all aspects of the art form.

Sport Taekwondo (Sparring)

Developed after traditional taekwondo, sport taekwondo has a focus, with a higher priority placed on competition training. This is characterised by high, spinning and acrobatic kicks, with an emphasis placed on speed, power and agility. At Gurumu Taekwondo, sport taekwondo is incorporated into all of our programmes, from children to seniors. We are active on the domestic and international competition circuits, and any student who shows promise is invited to join our Elite Sparring Team.

Poomsae (Patterns)

Poomsae is a specific sequence of movements that consists of taekwondo stances, blocks, punches and kicks. At Gurumu Taekwondo, we use poomsae to further develop techniques, precision, sharpness and accuracy. Poomsae is also an integral part of the examination process, and a high degree of accuracy is required to progress to the next belt level.

Self-Defence

We live in a dangerous world, and although we encourage students to avoid physical confrontations, they are not always avoidable. At Gurumu Taekwondo, we teach our students how to defend, defuse and prevent these situations. Understanding the art of taekwondo can instil a level of confidence, which enables students to make assured decisions. This aligns with one of the tenets of taekwondo: Self-control.
